Chicago, IL – After a banner week of endorsements from Mayor Lightfoot and the Chicago Sun-Times, Marie Newman’s campaign continued the momentum with endorsements from prominent Latino leaders. Former Illinois Rep. Luis V. Gutiérrez endorsed Marie Newman on Tuesday, citing her commitment to fighting for health care and protecting immigrants. Marie also received an endorsement from former presidential candidate and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro who emphasized her commitment to health care, education, and immigration for the people of Illinois’ Third District. Marie also spent the week meeting with constituents and laying out her vision to bring economic prosperity to IL-03. She kicked off the week at the Arab American Democratic Club candidate brunch, met with concerned constituents in Fairmont to discuss issues with the potential re-routing of the I-80 bridge, and later attended the Latino Leadership Council breakfast to support Latinx businesses and leaders in the community. Ahead of the March 17 primary, Marie described to the Chicago Tribune’s Editorial Board her highest priorities for the district and the state, including addressing the concerns of safety and security in our community. She detailed her plan to harness the grassroots movement created in the 3rd District and fight for economic opportunities for working families. Meanwhile, Dan Lipinski continues to prove his anti-choice agenda is too out of the mainstream for IL-03. As Roll Callpoints out Lipinski’s extreme stance on abortion, including signing onto an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, could “cost [him his] seat.” Congressman Gutiérrez released the following statement: “I am endorsing Marie Newman for Congress in Illinois’ Third District because I know that she will work with her constituents to do what is right in Washington. And I know that she has the experience, empathy, and understanding necessary to make her community a safe, secure, and prosperous home for all of her constituents, no matter where they come from. Marie is already doing the work. She has been fiercely dedicated to learning the concerns of everyone in her district and preparing to take bold action on healthcare and protecting and fighting for immigrants. I trust her to always be on the right side of justice and progress, and I urge you to join me in supporting her fight for a new day in Illinois’ Third District.”
